Bucerius Summer School 2018

ANCB in collaboration with the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, Hamburg

The Bucerius Summer School (BSS) workshop examined questions regarding visible and invisible borders on spatial, social, cultural, technical and economical levels through the fictional narratives and places of science fiction films.

This approach ensures an open, neutral discussion and enabled the participants to discuss very current topics in an “abstract” and “fictional” way without putting the focus on a specific government or country of origin. The participants were encouraged to contribute their own experience or concrete examples to the discussion. This one-day programme as part of the Bucerius Summer School 2018 at ANCB The Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory is linked to the public discussion Borders and Territories II: Spatial Representations of Connections and Disconnections scheduled for 27 September 2018 within the ANCB long-term programme Borders and Territories: Identity in Place.

The BSS event had two parts
1. Three input presentations with Q&A
2. A workshop session where the participants were divided into three groups. Each group examined a focus theme exemplified by a science fiction film. The participants were provided with a toolbox and the help of the visualizer/graphic facilitator. One moderator, one of the morning’s speakers and one visualizer led each workshop.

Workshop Themes
1. Social Control: This topic dealt with control through types of “social credit” systems and the subsequent impact on social and spatial levels.

2. Racism and Post-Colonialism: This workshop focused on spatial and political discrimination and segregation.

3. City/Periphery: In this workshop we examined borders between the urban and rural with regard to aspects of supply, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, economy, culture, connectivity and digitalization.
