BACKGROUND
Over the next 2-3 years, ANCB will think the city as a sequence of layers and conduct investigations through its inherent cross-sectoral enquiry methodology as part of the new project New Functions of the Surface. The cities' surface represents in many ways and through multiple functions an interdisciplinary testing space and area of intersection. This research on the cities' envelope, surfaces and spheres includes and goes beyond façades, roofs and pavements. It serves as the starting point for a societal, technological, cultural and infrastructural analysis, offering a new integrated understanding of the city, ways of perceptions, projections into the future and networking opportunities.
To display the full potential of the cities' surface in regards to innovation and experimentation, this kick-off event brought together a range of perspectives and disciplines. Eight speakers presented ten slides in ten minutes and talked about their personal experiences with new functions, partnerships and technologies. In case studies, the façade was documented as a multi-level test space and the function of the building shell as a communication element was explored through experimentation and interpreted as an interface for various aspects of urban design.
