Enquiry Week Water - Water as a Ritual

Call for additional proposals, ideas, information and papers from the fields of architecture, design, landscape architecture, science and industry for an international workshop focusing on the significance of water as element in everyday cultural rituals and their spatial context.

ANCB would like to thank everyone for their valuable contributions following our first "Water as ritual" call for submissions: the contributions provided important indications to the Enquiry Weeks' structure and development leading to this refined call for new partners and information for everyone who has already been in contact.

About the Enquiry Week
As an interdisciplinary cultural platform, Aedes Network Campus Berlin does not focus solely on any single knowledge field or topic. Instead it aims to bring together a range of different viewpoints and areas of expertise in order to stimulate a multi-faceted dialogue with an international outlook. In ANCB's general agenda a number of critical issues are identified as 'urban challenges'. The knowledge generated from each ANCB project interconnects with these crucial themes to deepen a multi-faceted understanding, made openly accessible in the ANCB 'Living Archive'. Resource consumption and particularly the issue of water is one of these 'urban challenges', which is continuously explored on different levels.

The perception of water influenced by cultural backgrounds and disciplines is reflected in various formats of rituals. This Enquiry Week in collaboration with AXOR hansgrohe will focus on the relevance and value of water in connection with cultural, wellnes-related, design- and research-oriented rituals in the following categories and related questions:

1. Swimming / Welness / Spa: What are today's rituals for water in everyday life in connection to our need to clean and nourish ourselves? What is the function of water in everyday-rituals for relaxation and sports? How is the element's role for structuring life and planning utilized facilities for swimming, recreation and wellness?
2. Rivers / Lakes / Water in public space: How to raise awareness at the interface of water, man and nature? Can water in the form of rivers act through rituals as a catalyst for future planning and development approaches? How does the power over and the use of water for example from rivers include economic aspects on a global level?
3. Water as design(ing) element: What is the relationship between space - ritual - water? Are new typologies needed? Does water in rituals change our perception of space on all scales-from private to the public? And how are new rituals created through marketing/communication strategies?
