PUBLIC DEBATE

Silence as Everyman's Right
Thursday, 22 May 2014

In collaboration with the artist Nina Backman

Date: Thursday, 22 May 2014, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Place: ANCB The Metropolitan Laboratory, Christinenstr. 18-19 (Pfefferberg), 10119 Berlin

The Silence Project considers how people in today’s world find and experience silence in cities; a debate that is of relevance to the redesign and planning of urban environments and future cities.

Founded by the Finnish artist / curator Nina Backman, the Silence Project was originally inspired by the traditional Finnish concept of “freedom to roam” or “everyman’s right” (Jokamiehenoikeus) that allows free access to nature, waterways and the right to collect natural products, regardless of the ownership of the land. All Nordic countries share the same right. This symbolizes the very essence of the Nordic culture: The close relationship with nature, where silence and space are always present.

The project sets out to use this initial frame of reference to explore the relationship between silence and space in an urban environment. Its aim is to generate an international dialogue on the theme of “Silence in Cities,” whereby guest experts from a variety of fields come together with the audience to reflect on how we source and experience silence in cities.

The project combines exhibitions, events, public lectures and artist talks, which are interdisciplinary in nature and content.

Of note in this project is its commitment to experimentation with different modes and technologies of user engagement and urban inhabitation. The accompanying App “My Silence Cities” will be presented in Berlin during this event.

Together with a short presentation of the concept created by the Finnish artist Nina Backman, guest lecturers will provide different perspectives on silence in urban space.
