Urban planning in Zurich has gained an international acclaim. The projects planned and realized during the past decade in this city have been well received by both experts and the public. Zurich has committed itself to “conceptual urban development”. What does this idea involve? And what distinguishes this method from others? What does “cooperative urban planning” mean? And what does it actually contribute to the development of an attractive city? The exhibition “Das 7. Zimmer - Konzeptioneller Städtebau in Zürich” / “The seventh Room - Urban Development in Zurich” tries to address these issues by drawing on built examples.
The image of the seven rooms of Zurich takes up another reading of the city: each room has certain characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, accentuating its uniqueness. How will we handle those features in the future? How can we reinforce positive traits and reduce negative ones?
The method is a conceptual approach. The essence of urban development in Zurich manifests itself in the positions and projects developed by the Department for Urban Development since 1997. An altered attitude toward the city is expressed by describing it as an apartment with several rooms. This metaphor comprises the identities of utilization and the development processes of individual urban districts in Zurich.
The exhibition displays the various challenges facing the urban quarters and exemplifies the approaches and results of urban development in Zurich. Not only by making them visible, but also by putting them up for discussion. Thus, the presented working methods are questioned in the light of their applicability in Europe and the rest of the world.
This atmospheric exhibition at Aedes am Pfefferberg in berlin will convey images, theses and processes which have changed the urban image of Zurich in the past ten years. Subsquently the show will be put on display in Switzerland before embarking on a tour of Europe.
