Strangers in the City

An exhibition of works by the Sauerbruch class at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The class is showing 8 x 2 films on the theme of the "stranger" in the context of the city; the architecture students have used the medium of film on the one hand as a tool of analysis and on the other as a means of expression. Accordingly, one film is dedicated to the description of an existing situation, documenting the students' own perception of the "stranger". A second film uses the new medium to communicate a design created during the semester on an atmospheric-emotional level beyond the classical means of representation of architecture. Stranger in the City" deals with situations of alienation, loss of meaning and homelessness. Architectural interventions in Stuttgart's city centre attempt to discover the foreign, to locate it or subliminally also to discover it as a vehicle that can generate a new familiarity in an environment increasingly devoid of meaning.
