Nearly a decade after the first Aedes exhibition devoted to the works of Titus Bernhard, the design and conceptual accomplishments of this Augsburg architect are being showcased in a new presentation. To date, Titus Bernhard Architekten have been associated in particular with high-quality residential villas and exclusive architectural projects that have won numerous awards. The wealth of experience acquired in planning and realizing such projects formed the basis for major recent undertakings such as the SGL Arena in Augsburg, completed in 2009, and the Town Hall in Bernried.
Less familiar is a different side of Titus Bernhard's achievements, one formed by his emphatic sense of social responsibility, his desire to bring a wider public closer to the intricate world of architecture, and his intensive concern with structural themes and specific leitmotifs in the context of the respective architectural task. Through selected projects, these attributes are highlighted in the exhibition. The ambivalence of these themes are aspects of the architect's intensive personal preoccupations and his creative approach to a rich spectrum of tasks, as exemplified in the competition entries for the Highschool in Bruckmühl and the Day Care and Youth Center in Göggingen, for example.
The works featured in both exhibition and catalogue document the high technical and aesthetic quality of each of Bernhard's numerous projects while providing insight into the enormous spectrum of new building tasks he has taken on. Without exception, they display the conceptual power and design strength characteristic of his architectural oeuvre as a whole.
The office of Titus Bernhard Architekten was established in Augsburg in 1995. Its spectrum of activities encompasses conceptual structural engineering, interior architecture, as well as open spaces and outdoor facilities. A special emphasis is the team's interdisciplinary makeup, which ranges from architecture, fine arts, mechanical engineering, computer animation, and new media to graphic design. The practice has received numerous awards, among them the "Kunstförderpreis Architektur" (art sponsorship award) from the city of Augsburg in 1998, the Bavarian BDA Prize in 2006, the Erich-Schelling-Medaille in 2006, and awards for "Best Architect" in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2012.
