As mediator of architecture to a larger audience, Hamburg-based architectural critic Manfred Sack has made a name for himself with his highly knowledgeable and cheerfully critical articles on architecture and contemporary architects, foremost published in German magazine ‘Die Zeit’.

In ‘Facts and Dreams’, an exhibition dedicated to Manfred Sack, the artist still deals with architecture, but this time not by means of language but by utilizing photography and collage. As by-products, so to speak, of his research and his encounters with big names and large edifices, sensitive portraits and collages full of magical power have been created - their spectrum ranging from the fantastic to the surrealist. Some of the works have already been displayed in smaller formats in his magazine articles and publications, but only in their original size do they unfold their complete fascination.

Since the beginning of his career, Manfred Sack has successfully introduced and illustrated architecture to a broader public. Or as he describes his intention in his book ‘Gods and Sheep’, ‘The only thing you need as a non-expert is curiosity and the joy of discovery’.

The exhibition in Studio am Pfefferberg displays a selection of his collages and photographs which are distinguished by the same affectionate and imaginative power of expressiveness as his textual work.

A catalogue with the title: ‘Personen und Possen / People and Pranks’ part of the series DAM Deutsches Architektur Museum - Aktuelle Galerie, will be available at the exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Anna Hesse, DAM Frankfurt.

Manfred Sack was born in 1928 in Coswig, Germany. Studies in history of art, PhD in musicology, 1959 to 1994 Editor for German weekly 'Die Zeit', 1970/71 Theodor-Wolf-Prize of the Bundesverband Deutscher Zeitungsverleger (Federal Association of German Newspaper publishers), 1976 BDA-Prize for architectural criticism and 1977 European Prize 'Pro Musica' by Hungarian broadcasting association.
