Simon Ungers, Köln/New York
This summer, Aedes will concentrate on the new works and projects of
architect/artist Simon Ungers, who lives both in New York and Köln. His
architectural steel-plastics will be shown in Aedes West, and a light
installation will be presented in the new Aedes Extension Pavilion, behind
the current gallery in the Hackeschen Höfe.
Simon Ungers has received international acclaim for his „T-House,“ an
abstract, private house constructed from Corten steel in upstate New York.
Similarly radical in its conceptuality is another private house made of
concrete in Ithaca, New York.
The preferred materials for his buildings and sculptures are steel and light,
and his projects, objects, and installations succeed in conveying a reductive
subliminalism. His works also evoke a melancholy distance, attracting both
attention and fascination. The structures and sculptures of Simon Ungers
open themselves, like the artist himself, only upon the second look, which
makes the view all the more intense. They follow the design of a reduced
formal language and appear in the singular, monumental present.

In the Aedes Extension Pavilion installation, the light leads to architecture;
in the Aedes West Gallery, formal concentration leads to art.
