13.15-14.45 Panel 5: Smart City - The Larger Scale
What do we actually mean by ‘city’? How does the complex, sprawling and active urban system function? And on what scale can we find significant and ‘smart’ solutions to the challenges of the twenty-first century? The panel will elaborate on the shifting relationship between society and nature, between nature and city, which will provide us with a new perspective for action to better plan and govern our complex urban landscape and make cities more resilient. It will present a selection of international case studies and some large scale examples on smart urban solutions. What smart processes and strategies can cities include into their planning? And what role can of (landscape) architecture play in making our cities and urban systems smart?

It is becoming a universally accepted concept that collaborative partnerships among city stakeholders are the key to the continued vitality, liveability and sustainability of cities. This is becoming particularly evident in the sustainable management of heritage cities and historic urban landscapes, where public-private partnerships are beginning to play a significant role. Values-based urban conservation management has resulted in innovative models of collaboration among policy makers, urban planners, city developers, architects, conservationists, businesses, property owners and citizens. A number of lessons for local governance and heritage management can be drawn from good practices in Asia and Europe.
