On the occasion of the state visit by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. Dr. Aníbal Cavaco Silva, to the Federal Republic of Germany from 3 - 6 March 2009, the Portuguese Architecture Chamber has conceived the architectural exhibition “Portugal outside Portugal”, which will be on display from 3 March - 9 April at the Architecture Forum AEDES at Pfefferberg in Berlin. The focus will be on projects realized by Portuguese architects abroad, for example in Angola, Belgium, Brazil, China, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Cape Verde Islands, Korea, East Timor, Switzerland, Spain, Czech Republic and Hungary. Curated by Portuguese architect Ricardo Carvalho, the exhibition aims to emphasise the strong significance and the influence of contemporary Portuguese architecture in an international environment and to highlight its vitality and its modern formal idiom. On display will be projects by Aires Mateus, Álvaro Siza, Jun Saung Kim, ARX Portugal, Atelier do Corvo, Barbini Arquitectos, Gonçalo Byrne, Inês Lobo e Pedro Domingos, João Luís Carrilho da Graça, João Mendes Ribeiro, José Adrião, Manuel Graça Dias + Egas José Vieira, Pedro Reis, Promotório Arquitectos Obol XI, Lojas, Risco, SAMI Arquitectos, Souto de Moura, Vilela & Gordon. The exhibition marks out a certain common identity of Portuguese architecture – as an expression of a building culture whose architects are capable of discerning and integrating with a particular sensibility the regional context of a building project and its diverse requirements and cultures. While establishing an intercultural dialogue, they successfully manage to maintain their individual significance and expressiveness. The opening of the exhibition by the Portuguese President manifests the confidence of the country’s building culture and underscores the reciprocal relevance of architecture as a formative element and means of expression of contemporary urban and cultural life in a socio-cultural context.
