AMP Artengo Menis Pastrana Architekten, Teneriffa
The Tenerife-based architectural firm AMP Artengo Menis Pastrana - founded in 1981 by Felipe Artengo Rufino, Fernando Martin Menis and Jose M° Rodriguez-Pastrana - will present four projects in the exhibition: the Canary Islands Sports Stadium and Seat of Government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Congress and Events Centre in Playa de Las Américas, Tenerife and the redevelopment of the port area of Santa Cruz de La Palma. The results of the international competition "Las Maretas", a museum and exhibition building in Lanzarote, will also be presented. AMP was the first prize winner. Renowned European architects took part in the competition: Enric Miralles - Bendetta Tagliabue (Barcelona), Günter Zamp Kelp (Berlin), Ingenhoven, Overdiek & Partner (Düsseldorf), Studio van Berkel & Bos (Amsterdam). All designs will be presented. About the competition: The dry, arid landscape of Lanzarote has always strongly influenced the island. With the first desalination plant in Spain, 1964, Lanzarote gave up the (building) culture of fresh water production. The competition now pursues the idea of preserving existing water reservoirs - Las Maretas del Estado, built between 1901 and 1913, with 138,000 square metres and a capacity of 16,000 cubic metres in 16 cisterns - and thus creating an interdisciplinary centre for the country's contemporary culture. The significant historical heritage, together with modern architecture, is intended to set a sign for the future. AMP's basic design premises for the sports stadium were to merge the planned arena with the surrounding urban structure and to deal with the unique scale of this type of space. The seating stands of the stadium will be integrated into the natural hilly landscape surrounding the sports field. The large covered entrance area creates space for all interior functions: a covered sports field, changing rooms, gymnastics room, canteen, conference hall, medical care, etc. The congress and event centre on the beach of Las Américas in Tenerife has to co-exist with a very difficult environment, due to the motorway that passes directly by. The only reference points in the area are the rocks, the desert landscape, the sea and the imposing views of the island of La Gomera. The architects respond to this situation by approaching the landscape - geometric concrete cubes rise up from the ground like rocks. The roofs of the cubes form wave formations and protrude above the "rocks". Kristin Feireiss, Berlin/Rotterdam and Gerado Mingo Pinacho, Ministerio de Fomento, Madrid, will speak at the opening of the exhibition.
