This exhibition, organized in the context of the Sommer Berlinale 2010, deals with the “cinema of the future” and with the role it can play in urban public space, thereby providing a contribution to discussions of the new artistic, urbanistic, and social dimensions of cinema.
The exhibition installation is composed of video clips which document and artistically implement dynamic situations found in Berlin Mitte, and cinematic concepts, all of them set in Berlin. The spectrum extends from temporary open-air cinema all the way to movie palaces which combine new screening technologies and the spatial reconfiguration of the classical movie house. Shared by all projects is a concern with exploring the question: How might a new society of cinema-goers be constituted via the new cinema?
Also on display as a direct continuation of the workshop topic will be a far-reaching architectural design for a “cinema building of the future” by two Diplom candidates from the Studio of Wolf D. Prix of the Universität für Angewandte Kunst / University of Applied Arts, Vienna.

On the contents:
Taking place in February in the framework of the Aedes Network Campus Berlin and in collaboration with the Berlinale Keynotes 2010 and the Universität für Angewandte Kunst / University of Applied Arts, Vienna, was a one-week international architectural workshop. The topic of the compact brainstorming workshop, with participating students from Berlin, Delft, Mexico City, Paris, Madrid, Seoul, and Vienna, and directed by a group of architects associated with Wolf D. Prix (Coop Himmelb(l)au), was the question of the interdependency between architectural space and of the moving image and the potential for a future, alternative form of cinema.
The architecture workshop “Berlin in Motion” dealt with the registration, representation, and transformation of architectural space through dynamic media such as film, video, and digital animation technologies, and consisted of two parts: the first part dealt with perceptions of built space by means of the film camera: students produced 30-second video clips which recorded the decidedly dynamic situations found in Berlin-Mitte. Part II used these clips as points of departure in order to develop and physically enact new concepts involving film and moving images at specific downtown locations. The results extend from simple architectural installations all the way to cinema buildings which combine new screening technologies with the spatial reconfiguration of the classical movie house. Shared by all projects is a concern with exploring the question: How might a new society of cinema-goers be constituted via the new cinema?
