Das Neue Mariinsky Theater St. Petersburg in, London
The French architect Dominique Perrault has won the competition for the new Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Russia is not only getting a cultural building that sets world standards, it is also the first time the Russian government has commissioned a foreign architect for a state project. Perrault's design, with its amorphous appearance of a golden cocoon, creates a landmark of contemporary architecture for St. Petersburg. The new building houses another two thousand seats and new stages for international productions.
