A jubilee exhibition at Aedes Architecture Forum dedicated to Volkwin Marg on his 80th birthday – as a renowned architect, man of the world, adventurer, author, esthete, troublemaker, teacher, and critical commentator on architectural and urban developments.

Volkwin Marg is widely known for his architectural oeuvre, which includes such projects as the “Congress Center Leipzig”, the “Rimini Convention Center” in Emilia-Romagna, Italy; the renovation and roofing of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, and the National Stadium in Warsaw. His buildings are shaped by his engagement with the historical and political context of the location, as well as his sense of social responsibility. However, just a few know his personal side, which is reflected in his love for the mountains, flying, ships and the sea, as well as the countless research trips he has taken, often accompanied by his students.

For this reason, the exhibition will focus its content and spatial design on two central themes: ratio and emotio. In doing so, “Volkwin Marg: The World of an Architect” offers an intimate view into the multifaceted and remarkable personality of Volkwin Marg, and the extensive historical and cultural events that have shaped the course of his life.

What is special about this exhibition lies in its anecdotal approach, with Volkwin Marg himself serving as the narrator. It will address a selection of diverse topics, illuminating highlights from the rich spectrum of Marg’s work, by drawing on six publications: “Architecture is – Not Apolitical, of Course”, “Choreography of the Masses”, “On Old Foundations” and the recent “Secret Project HafenCity”, the documentation “Active, History of a Three-Masted Top Gallant Schooner”, and the collection of interviews, “So Quick the Mind, So Slow the Soul.”

In the first of the two exhibition rooms, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in Marg’s world of ideas: the ratio. Visitors can explore a wide variety of topics through images, films, lectures, essays, interviews, and manifestos. In the next room, large-format projections and objects give visitors a glimpse into the expanse and freedom of the emotio – which is dedicated to Marg’s world between the sea and the sky. The many points of intersection between ratio and emotio shed light on the experiences and positions of this architect, who questions the cultural and political conditions of architecture in society – as a critical witness, architect, and citizen. Relentlessly in search of new syntheses of nature, technology and the formative arts, he reflects on appropriate standards for architecture as the most richly associative of all the arts.
